Everybody at Christmas has expectations. There isn’t any holiday that comes with more expectations than Christmas. Retailers at Christmas expect booming business and sales. Students expect a break from their studies so they could sleep in. Employees expect a bonus and a few days off. Californians expect traffic; some things never change. Children expect to find presents under the tree. Families expect to spend the holidays together and to get along with each other. We expect the world to be a better, brighter, happier place even for a day or two. But things don’t turn out the way we thought or the way we had hoped. We thought we had more money to work with this Christmas, but we don’t. We thought we would be spending the holiday with someone special, but we’re not. We’re hoping to find an iWatch under the tree, or a diamond ring, or a Nintendo Switch – instead we find a shirt and it doesn’t even fit! Christmas doesn’t always go the way we expect it. The same could be said of the original Christmas. We find that Christ came in unexpected ways and in unexpected moments. The Messiah came not in the way people thought or hoped, but in an unexpected way He brought hope, wonder, love, joy, and peace. Maybe we could find Christ in unexpected ways this Christmas!
